Lower Back Lift Surgery

Back Lift Surgery at CREO Clinic

A lower back lift is a surgery that removes excess skin and fat in the lower back and buttocks. As a result, the surgery resolves skin laxity and gets rid of love handles (the folds of skin and fat on the sides of the waist) to provide a more toned and defined lower body.

Additionally, our surgeons often perform lower-back lifts in conjunction with a procedure called buttock auto-augmentation. Here, the surgeon rotates the fat tissue in the lower back over the buttock muscles to provide volume where desired and take it away from areas where it’s not.

Dr Omar Tillo is a body contouring specialist who has the training and expertise to customise the procedure according to the patient’s cosmetic needs to produce natural-looking results. He has performed lower back lifts on many patients, including in combination with other surgeries such as buttock auto-augmentation, liposuction, and fat grafting to produce optimal results.

Benefits of Lower Back Lift Surgery

Many people develop saggy skin and love handles in the lower back, which may be due to genetics, ageing, or drastic weight loss. The sagging skin and tissue may be concealing the natural definition of your lower back and buttocks. A lower back lift helps patients achieve a slimmer and more toned figure by trimming the excess skin and fat and tightening the remaining skin.

As a result, after the surgery, many patients regain the confidence to wear clothing and swimwear that exposes their lower back and are motivated to lead a more active lifestyle with their slimmer and defined physique.

Additionally, with the procedure, the surgeon may be able to reposition the fat tissue over the buttock muscles, thus enhancing your butt while slimming your waist to accentuate curves in the right areas.

Lower Back Lift Procedure

A lower back lift takes between 2-5 hours to perform, depending on the complexity of your surgery. You will be under general anaesthesia for the procedure. The surgeon creates an incision along the lower back, just above the buttocks. Afterwards, they will remove the excess skin and fat in the lower back. Finally, the surgeon will stretch and tighten the remaining skin before closing the incision with sutures.

If performing buttock auto-augmentation, the surgeon will remove only the excess skin while leaving the fat tissue. The surgeon will create pockets under the skin over the buttock muscle to insert the fat tissue. To do so, they will rotate the fat tissue downwards to ensure it remains attached to the blood supply.

Recovery

Immediately after the surgery, you will experience swelling, tightness, and numbness in the lower back. These side effects gradually dissipate in 1-2 weeks, after which most patients can return to work and light activities. However, you must wait at least six weeks before resuming more strenuous exercise and activities. We will prescribe medication and provide detailed aftercare instructions to help make your recovery as comfortable as possible.

Results

You will notice immediate results after your surgery as your lower back will appear more defined without the excess skin and fat. However, it may take up to 6 months before the final results of your lower back lift emerge.

By this time, the residual swelling will dissipate, and you will have a more natural-looking contoured lower back. Additionally, if you had a buttock auto-augmentation, the skin in your butt will have stretched to accommodate the fat tissue, thus creating an enhancement that looks and feels natural.

Complementary Procedures

Lower Back Lift and Bra Line Back Lift

A bra line back lift is a surgery that removes excess skin and fat in the upper back, which accumulates around the bra line (commonly called bra bulges or back rolls). Many people who have excess skin in the lower back also wish to contour their bra line area to smoothen and even out the appearance of their back. In such cases, combining a lower back lift with a bra line back lift provides a more dramatic and natural-looking result.

Back Lift and Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and, in some cases, tightens the muscles in the area. Many people develop folds of excess skin and fat in the stomach. In such cases, the combination of a back lift and tummy tuck, also known as a belt lipectomy, is an ideal procedure as it contours and evens out the appearance of the front and back of the upper body.

Lower Back Lift FAQ

Is lower back lift surgery permanent?

Yes, a lower back lift permanently removes excess skin and fat in the lower back. However, you will need to maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery, as any fluctuations in weight can alter your results. Additionally, you can expect to develop some skin laxity in the area due to ageing.

Who is a good candidate for lower back lift surgery?

Your plastic surgeon will need to examine you to confirm your eligibility for the procedure. In general, any adult with excess skin and fat in the lower back, with no underlying medical conditions, and a BMI below 30 is likely to qualify for the procedure.

How much weight do you lose with a lower back lift?

The amount of weight you lose after a back lift depends on the excess skin and fat in the area. Some patients have lost around 2-4 kg after a lower back lift.

Is lower back lift surgery worth it?

Many people are unhappy with the folds of skin and fat in their lower back, as it prevents them from wearing tight clothing, feels uncomfortable, and conceals their weight loss efforts. Therefore, many patients consider a lower back lift worthwhile for adding definition to the area and improving their waistline. Additionally, the surgery offers permanent and natural-looking results.
