Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

What is Fat Transfer to the Breasts?

Fat transfer breast augmentation describes the procedure where fat is moved from different areas of the body to the breasts to increase the volume and enhance the shape.

The procedure first involves liposuction to remove the fat from parts of the body where it is in excess such as the abdomen or thighs. The harvested fat is then safely injected into the breasts in a process known as fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, fat injections or lipofilling.

At the CREO Clinic, Dr. Omar Tillo performs breast augmentation using fat transfer, implants, or Dr. Tillo’s signature composite breast augmentation procedure. As a double-board certified surgeon specialising in body contouring procedures, he has performed hundreds of liposuction and fat grafting procedures. As such, he has mastered the surgical skills and artistic precision required to perform fat transfer to the breasts in a way that delivers natural-feeling and natural-looking results.

Benefits of Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation comes with a range of unique advantages:

No Foreign Implants

Some women prefer breast augmentation with fat transfer rather than implants. As the procedure adds volume to the breasts using the patient’s fat tissue instead of foreign material, the risk of an allergic reaction is nullified.

Natural Enhancement

A fat transfer breast augmentation produces results that look and feel more natural.

For Subtle Results

A fat transfer may be preferable for women who want a more modest breast enhancement than the substantial increase in volume resulting from implants.

Surgical Precision

Fat transfer breast augmentation also offers the surgeon more control over reshaping the breasts, correcting specific concerns that implants alone may not be able to address.

Permanent Results

The injected fat grafts stabilise and become a permanent part of the breasts. While breast implants are also permanent, many women have them replaced in 10-15 years due to the implants rupturing or capsular contracture.

How Does Fat Transfer to Breasts Work?

Fat transfer breast augmentation uses the body’s own fat cells to enhance the breasts in two main stages, liposuction and fat transfer.

First the fat is removed via liposuction in areas where there is an excess, such as the abdomen or thighs. This involves inserting a suction cannula via tiny incisions to break apart and remove the fat cells. The fat is then processed, purified and prepared for injection into the breasts.

Small incisions are then made around the breasts where the fat is injected, adding noticeable volume and enhancing the shape of the breasts.

    What to Expect

    Personal Consultation

The first step in undergoing a fat transfer breast augmentation is to book a consultation with Dr. Tillo. During your consultation, you will be able to discuss the areas of your breasts that you wish to change, and the results you want to achieve. Dr. Tillo will perform a full examination and describe the ways in which fat transfer breast augmentation can be used to alleviate your aesthetic concerns, and will ensure that you have realistic expectations about the procedure.

You will also be asked about your medical history, including any medications you take, allergies you have and any past procedures you have undergone. This will help Dr. Tillo determine your suitability for surgery.

    Preparing for Surgery

Prior to a fat transfer procedure, you will need to take several steps to be prepared for surgery:

    • Maintain your BMI – Your BMI will need to remain stable, at a suitable level to reduce the risk of complications during and after surgery.
    • Oestrogen Contraceptives/HRT – You will need to stop taking the oral contraceptive pill or HRT four weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.
    • Stop Smoking – You will need to cease all nicotine consumption four weeks before surgery as this can cause complications.
    • Reduce Alcohol Intake – Reduce your alcohol consumption to ensure your body is able to heal effectively after surgery.
    • Prep your home – Ensure your home is comfortable for your return after surgery, making any necessary arrangements for child care and pet care.

The Fat Transfer to Breasts Procedure

A fat transfer breast augmentation can be performed under sedation or general anaesthesia and lasts 2-3 hours. First, Dr. Tillo performs liposuction by inserting a suction cannula through a small incision into a targeted area such as the abdomen. Afterwards, the surgeon purifies and prepares the harvested fat for injection.

Finally, Dr. Tillo injects the fat into the breasts to create your desired shape and enhancement. Dr. Tillo will inject up to the maximum amount of fat that the breasts can hold (depending on the patient’s desired results) to account for the 30-50% of fat cells that your body will absorb over the following 3-6 months.

    Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Recovery

During your recovery from fat transfer breast augmentation, you may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the breasts which should gradually wear off. You will be provided with a compression bra to wear for the first six weeks after surgery to manage any swelling and associated discomfort.

Overall, you should feel able to return to work and light activities two weeks after your procedure. However, it can take 4-6 weeks before you feel able to resume more strenuous activities and exercises.

    Results Timeline

You will notice an immediate enhancement in the volume and shape of your breasts after surgery. However, it takes around 3-6 months before you can fully appreciate the final results of your surgery.

By this time, the swelling will have subsided, and the fat grafts will have settled to reveal the permanent volume and contouring effects of your surgery. Additionally, your skin will have expanded to accommodate the new fat cells, which will make your results look and feel natural (a process known as fluffing).

    Possible Risks or Complications

Fat transfer is considered to be a safe procedure, with risks and complications being rare. However, there are some complications to be aware of:

    • Volume loss
    • Lumpiness, waviness, unevenness and/or dimpling
    • Skin discolouration
    • Wrinkling and looseness of the skin
    • Deep swelling
    • Irregularities or asymmetry
    • Loss of sensation
    • Fat necrosis
    • Fat embolism

Choosing Between Fat Transfer to Breasts vs. Breast Implants

Some patients may prefer breast implants over fat transfer if they want a more significant enhancement than can be achieved with fat transfer or if they don’t wish to or cannot have liposuction due to a lack of body fat.

The differences between the two methods are summarised in the table below. You can discuss the best option for you during a consultation with our Dr. Tillo.

    What is Composite Breast Augmentation?

Composite breast augmentation, also known as LipoImplant augmentation, is a technique that combines both implants and fat transfer to deliver superior results than is possible when using either method on its own. CREO Clinic is one of few clinics in the UK currently offering this procedure.

With the composite breast augmentation technique, the surgeon can better customise the procedure to deliver natural-looking results. This technique may be ideal for you if:

    • You want a substantial breast enhancement but lack enough breast tissue to fully conceal the implant, in which case the surgeon can use fat grafts to cover the implant.
    • The natural shape and placement of your breasts do not allow the surgeon to add volume to the upper part of the breasts and maximise the cleavage with implants alone.
    • You have small and asymmetrical breasts, in which case the surgeon may need to use implants and fat grafts to create proportionate and symmetrical results.
    • The effects of ageing have changed your breast size and shape, in which case the surgeon can use fat grafts to restore your results.

    Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation FAQs

Why is fat transfer to breasts known as natural breast augmentation?

Fat transfer breast augmentation utilises the body’s own fat cells from areas of the body where there is an excess and moves it to the breasts, adding volume without the need for artificial implants and making it a more natural alternative.

Furthermore, the transferred fat will feel natural like fat in other areas of the body, whereas silicone implants can feel harder to the touch.

Is fat transfer breast augmentation effective?

Fat transfer breast augmentation can increase the size of the breasts by up to one cup size per surgery. However, for those seeking an additional increase in size, the procedure can be repeated to achieve the desired results..

In addition, the transferred fat grafts, once settled, will permanently stay in the breasts.

How much volume can you add with a fat transfer to the breasts?

The volume resulting from a fat transfer varies from patient to patient, depending on the amount of excess fat and breast tissue that the patient has. On average, you can expect an increase of up to 1 cup size following a fat transfer to the breasts. If needed, you can repeat the procedure to achieve a bigger size.
How long does a fat transfer breast augmentation take?

A fat transfer breast augmentation usually takes 2-3 hours in surgery, depending on the amount of fat to be moved and the number of liposuction areas targeted.
How soon will I see the results from a fat transfer breast augmentation?

You will immediately notice an increase in the volume of your breasts after surgery. However, you will need to wait until any post-surgical swelling has dissipated and the fat grafts have settled before you can appreciate the final results of your fat transfer breast augmentation. This can take up to 3-6 months.

How long do the results of a fat transfer to the breasts last?

The results from a fat transfer are permanent. Once the fat cells have settled, they will be connected to your blood supply and become a natural part of your breasts. However, this means your fat cells will expand and contract if you gain or lose weight, thus altering your results. Therefore, it’s important to avoid fluctuations in weight to maintain results.

Can you breastfeed after a fat transfer to the breasts?

A fat transfer to the breasts doesn’t affect your ability to breastfeed as the surgeon won’t inject the fat around your nipples or milk ducts.
What are the pros and cons of a fat transfer breast augmentation?

The pros of fat transfer breast augmentation include getting rid of excess fat, minimal scarring, permanent results, and more natural results than having breast implants alone.

The cons of fat transfer include the limited enhancement it can provide and the less predictable results due to the rate of fat absorption. In contrast, implants offer a more dramatic enhancement and predictable result.

    Complementary Procedures

    Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)

A Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is a fat grafting procedure where fat is removed from chosen liposuction zones and injected into the buttocks to increase the volume, and enhance the shape of the buttocks.

By combining a BBL with fat transfer breast augmentation, greater definition is added to the liposuction areas and the curves of the body are made more prominent to produce a highly desirable hourglass figure

    Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure that removes lax skin from the abdomen to contour and flatten the stomach. As the fat cells harvested during fat transfer breast augmentation are commonly taken from the abdomen, combining the procedures can produce dramatic results for the upper body by removing both lax skin and stubborn fat.
