Micro & Nano Fat Grafting

What are Micro and Nano Fat Grafting Procedures?

Over time it is normal for your body to show signs of ageing, such as a loss of plumpness in the skin and the development of wrinkles. Micro and nano fat grafting are excellent, non-invasive fat transfer methods for creating natural-looking enhancements to the skin for a more youthful appearance in the face, neck, or chest.

Both micro and nano fat grafting involve harvesting small amounts (20-50ml) of the body’s own fat cells from areas where it is in excess like the abdomen or thighs via liposuction. This fat is then purified before being injected into the desired treatment area via a series of small incisions. The results include increased volume for micro fat transfer, and skin rejuvenation for nano transfer.

The CREO Clinic’s experienced cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Omar Tillo, is an expert in fat transfer procedures and can help you understand how micro and nano fat grafting can help you reach your personal aesthetic goals. Why Should You Choose Micro or Nano Fat Grafting?

Micro fat transfer can be used for patients seeking to add volume to the treatment area. For example, to restore volume lost in the face as a result of ageing.

Nano fat grafting involves emulsifying the fat to a cellular level and utilising the stem cells in the fat for skin rejuvenation. This can improve the overall texture, firmness and appearance of the skin. Nano fat grafting can also be used to target specific aesthetic concerns like scarring.

What Areas Do Micro and Nano Fat Grafting Treat?

Micro and nano fat grafting are versatile procedures that can target different areas of the body.

Facial Rejuvenation

Micro fat transfer is a great option for enhancing the face and creating a more youthful appearance by lifting and adding volume to areas such as the undereyes, temples and cheeks.

Alternatively, nano fat transfer can be used to rejuvenate the condition of the skin, improving the appearance and texture of the skin.

Hand Rejuvenation

Your hands can often be greatly affected by ageing, showing wrinkles and decreased skin elasticity long before other areas of the body. Small, carefully targeted micro fat injections around the hands can help to smooth out the skin and address hollows.

Nano fat injections can also be used in the hands to improve and enhance the texture and plumpness of the skin.

Neck Rejuvenation

As you age or after significant weight loss, the skin around your neck can lose volume, which can lead to it becoming loose and drooping. Micro fat grafting can help to minimise this effect by adding volume to the deflated skin.

Nano fat injections can be used in the neck to prevent the drooping appearance of the skin.

Decolletage Rejuvenation

Lax skin in the decolletage area can be a bothersome aesthetic concern, especially when wearing low cut tops. To improve the appearance of the drooping skin and provide a firmer finish, nano fat injections can be used in this area.

Micro and Nano Fat Grafting Recovery Time

Both micro and nano fat grafting is minimally invasive and performed under either local anaesthetic or sedation. As a result, the downtime necessary is short and most patients feel able to resume most light activities after 48 hours.

Micro and Nano Fat Grafting Results

The full and final results of micro fat grafting should be visible after the fat cells have stabilised and all post-operative swelling has dissipated, which typically takes up to three months. After this, your skin will appear more youthful, with volume restored to the targeted areas.

The results for nano fat grafting, however, typically take longer to show, as the body takes around six months to build new collagen. The skin will then appear rejuvenated, improving the texture, firmness and overall appearance of the skin.

Micro and Nano Fat Grafting FAQs

Are the results of micro and nano fat grafting permanent?

You can expect the body to naturally absorb 30-50% of injected micro fat grafts within the first three months after surgery. However, your surgeon will account for this when deciding the amount of fat to be injected.  After three months, the remaining fat cells will permanently stay in their position, giving long-lasting volume to the area, though some patients may choose to ‘top up’ with additional fat years later due to ageing.  For nano fat grafting, the duration of the results are longer lasting when compared to other skin rejuvenation treatments. However, results can be affected by ageing, pollution and sun damage, meaning additional treatments may be needed.

Does nano fat grafting look more natural than fillers?

Not only does nano and micro fat grafting look more natural than fillers, but it also generally comes with fewer risks and side effects than chemical treatments; fat grafting only uses natural material from your body to enhance the skin.

What is the difference between dermal fillers and micro and nano fat injection?

One of the crucial differences between dermal fillers and nano fat or micro fat injection is that the effects of the latter are permanent; dermal fillers require regular follow-ups and will need to be revisited over time. The effects of nano fat or micro fat grafting are extremely effective and long lasting. Nano fat injections are different to dermal fillers in that they are aimed at targeting skin rejuvenation as opposed to adding volume. This is similar to Profhilo and other collagen remodelling injections.  There are several major differences between micro fat grafting and dermal fillers. Micro fat injections last longer, appear and feel more natural to the touch, and involve less risk of allergic reactions by using the body’s own fat.

Who is an appropriate candidate for the procedure?

For both micro and nano fat injections, patients should have sufficient fat that can be harvested for the procedure, and will need to be in good health, with a BMI less than 35.   A good candidate for micro fat injections is a patient seeking to restore volume to small, targeted areas of the body, such as the face or hands. For patients looking to rejuvenate the skin to improve its appearance and texture, nano fat injections are most appropriate.

What is the technology behind the procedure?

At the CREO Clinic, we use Tulip kits to transfer fat to the target area(s).

How should I prepare for the procedure?

Prior to surgery, it is recommended that you avoid smoking 4 weeks prior to surgery, and minimise alcohol consumption, as these substances can increase the risk of complications both during and after surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

For both nano and micro fat transfer, it typically takes 30 minutes to collect the fat cells and a further 30 minutes to process them and transfer as desired.

Will there be visible scarring?

Scarring will be minimal at the sites where fat is removed via liposuction, leaving small marks around 2-3 mm in size.  Scarring in the areas where fat is injected will also be minimal as only tiny incisions are needed.

Will I require follow-up procedures?

Although the stabilised fat cells from micro fat transfer will remain permanently in place, patients may wish to ‘top up’ their treatment in the coming years as additional volume is desired, for example, due to ageing.  You may also require additional nano fat transfer procedures as the results can be affected by factors such as ageing, pollution and sun damage.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Nano and micro fat transfer are often performed with other procedures such as facelifts and similar facial rejuvenation treatments. In addition, they can also form part of back and hand rejuvenation and labia majora rejuvenation.
