Resting and avoiding strenuous activities, such as a workout, after a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is key to optimising your BBL results. Below, we’ll discuss when and how you can work out after BBL surgery.
In general, patients can resume office work and light daily activities around a week after plastic surgery and more strenuous activities after four weeks. Your buttocks and any areas where you had liposuction may be swollen, bruised, and tender during the recovery period, which will gradually subside over the coming days and weeks. Follow our aftercare and recovery tips to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.
Here, we detail a typical recovery timeline after a BBL procedure. The timeline will differ for each patient depending on their profile and the complexity of their plastic surgery.
The post-surgical side effects will persist for the first week after surgery and should begin dissipating during the second week. During this time, you should prioritise rest and keep your activities to a minimum. However, we recommend taking daily short walks as soon as you feel able.
Most patients return to office work and resume light daily activities by week 3 of their recovery. However, you may still have some swelling, and your fat grafts will not have stabilised yet. Therefore, you should continue to refrain from working out during this week, although you can take multiple daily walks.
You can begin to exercise during this period after consulting with your surgeon. We recommend gradually easing yourself into your regular workout by starting with light exercises for a few days before proceeding to higher intensity workouts and weightlifting.
During this period, most patients will be fully recovered and notice the results of their Brazilian butt lift. You can resume all activities, although you may still experience some residual swelling. To maintain the results of your BBL surgery, you should carry on exercising and eating a healthy diet to keep a stable weight.
After the surgeon injects the fat into your butt, it takes several weeks for the fat cells to stabilise and integrate into surrounding tissue in the area and connect to the blood supply. For this process to work, the fat grafts require a stable environment. Thus, moving too much with rigorous exercises can damage the fat cells, which will result in a loss of volume and diminish the contouring effects of the surgery.
Once your surgeon clears you to start working out, you can begin to do workouts that further enhance and firm your butt for a more toned figure. Exercises that will improve your Brazilian butt lift results include squats, lunges, side lunges, glute bridges, and other lower body strength training exercises. These exercises target your gluteal muscles and increase muscle mass in the area, which will make your butt appear firmer and more enhanced.
Once recovered, there aren’t any specific exercises that you should necessarily avoid after BBL surgery. However, you have to balance the intensity of your workouts with a sufficient calorie intake to avoid fluctuations in weight. For instance, running, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), cross-fit, and other strenuous cardio workouts can burn a large number of calories that you should account for by eating enough calories to prevent diminishing your results.
In addition to altering your workout routine, here are a few more tips that will help you recover faster and optimise the results of your Brazilian butt lift surgery:
If you gain weight on your buttock, you can destroy the newly injected fat grafts, thus diminishing your results. Therefore, you should avoid sitting down and putting pressure on your butt for at least three weeks after your surgery. You may sit down for brief periods using alternative sitting positions that keep the weight off your butt. For a further two weeks, you should minimise the pressure on your butt by sitting on soft pillows.
Drinking fluids helps aid the healing process by supplying the body with electrolytes, salts, and minerals that help your body fight off infections, minimise swelling, and repair cells. We advise you to drink at least 1-2 litres of water per day and avoid caffeinated and sugary beverages, which can cause dehydration and fluctuations in blood sugar levels
During your BBL recovery process, you should consume enough calories (at least 2000 per day) that are rich in nutrients to fuel your immune system and feed the fat grafts so that they survive and stabilise in your butt. We recommend a low carb, high protein diet; foods that contain minerals and vitamins, such as fruits and vegetables; and foods that contain healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, fish, and eggs.
Before surgery, you will receive a compression garment that you should wear for six weeks, except when you shower. Compression garments apply pressure to the treated area as they tightly fit your body. As a result, it protects the incisions, improves circulation, minimises swelling and pain, and further contours the body.
Lymphatic drainage massages encourage the movement and drainage of lymph fluids out of the body, which may build up after surgery. As a result, the massages reduce swelling and inflammation. Additionally, the massages smooth out the muscles and fibrous tissue, which reduces deep scarring. Our surgeons recommend getting at least 3 lymphatic massages while you recover.
As soon as you can, you should walk and do light exercises to increase blood circulation and reduce the risk of complications following surgery. Going for short daily walks during your recovery reduces the chances of developing blood clots and helps with the swelling. However, you should avoid walking rigorously or strenuous workouts and instead engage in gentle movements.
If you wish to enhance and reshape your butt, you can discuss your eligibility for a Brazilian Butt Lift with Dr Omar Tillo at the CREO Clinic. During your consultation, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr Tillo will discuss your desired results, design a bespoke treatment, and explain the recovery process in further detail.
Additionally, he will describe the BEST-F technique, which he developed as a safer alternative to the traditional Brazilian butt lift procedure. The BEST-F method uses a guided ultrasound device to produce a more contoured shape as it enables the surgeon to inject fat grafts with greater precision.
