Procedure

A fat transfer procedure can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to perform under sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the areas being treated. First, the surgeon starts by performing liposuction on targeted areas to extract the excess fat. The fat grafts will then be purified and injected into the areas that require enhancement.

Recovery

You will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the areas that were treated with liposuction and fat injection. These symptoms usually dissipate in 1-2 weeks, after which you can return to office work and most daily activities. However, it may take 4-6 weeks before you can resume strenuous activities. You will be provided with recovery tips and guidelines before surgery to help you prepare.

Results

Although you will notice the immediate contouring effects of the fat transfer, the final results may take 3-6 months to become apparent as it takes time for the residual swelling to dissipate and for the fat grafts to settle. 

During this time, you may notice a 30-50% decrease in the volume of your immediate result, as not all fat grafts will survive the transfer. However, your surgeon will account for this by injecting the appropriate amount of volume to deliver your desired result. The remaining fat will connect with the blood supply in the area and remain in place permanently.

Tummy Tuck

Also known as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is a surgery that removes excess skin from the abdomen and, in some cases, tightens the abdominal muscles.

Procedure

A tummy tuck can take anywhere between 2-5 hours to perform under sedation or general anaesthesia. The most common variations of the surgery are the full and mini tummy tuck. 

A full tummy tuck requires a longer incision along the bikini line and an incision around the belly button. It removes excess skin in the upper and lower abdomen while also tightening the abdominal muscles if needed. Whereas, a mini tummy tuck removes excess skin in the lower abdomen through a smaller incision along the bikini line and does not involve muscle repair.

Recovery

After a tummy tuck, you will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in your abdomen. Most patients will be able to return to work and other daily activities within 1-2 weeks after a mini tummy tuck and after 2 weeks following a full tummy tuck. It may take around 3-4 weeks and up to 8 weeks before patients can resume more strenuous activities after a mini and full tummy tuck, respectively.

Results

Your abdomen will look noticeably flatter and contoured after surgery. However, you will need to wait until the residual swelling dissipates before you can enjoy its full contouring effects. Therefore, your results will continually improve for 6-12 months after the surgery, and the resulting scarring will gradually begin to fade.
