Buttock Implants

Buttock Implants at CREO

Buttock implant, or gluteal implant surgery, adds volume and reshapes the bottom using medical-grade silicone implants. In addition to Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), buttock implant surgery is another type of buttock augmentation we offer at the CREO clinic.

Performing a buttock implant surgery requires extensive surgical skills and expertise as the surgeon must customise the procedure to meet the unique requirements of each patient. As such, very few plastic surgeons in the UK are qualified to perform the surgery. From deciding on the size and shape of the implants to their placement in relation to the gluteal muscles, a surgeon’s discretion is essential to achieving your desired result.

As a double board-certified surgeon that specialises in body contouring surgeries, Dr Omar Tillo has performed many buttock implant surgeries in London using different surgical techniques. As a result, he has the skills and expertise to design a bespoke procedure that improves your lower body proportions by providing you with an enhanced bottom.

Benefits of Butt Implants

Buttock augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the UK, as the bottom is an area of the body that many people wish to enhance to achieve their ideal figure.

Having a curvaceous and rounded bottom is considered aesthetically desirable, and many patients want to improve their body confidence by attaining this feature. As gluteal implants are available in many shapes and sizes, the surgeon can reshape an asymmetrical or disproportionate bottom to create the patient’s desired result.

While there are several cosmetic treatments for buttock augmentation, some patients choose butt implants for a few key reasons:

  • Brazilian Butt Lift surgery may not be a viable option for patients who lack enough fat in their bodies to extract and transfer into the buttocks.
  • Some patients prefer the greater certainty of the final results from a butt implant surgery. In contrast, a percentage of butt fillers or fat cells from a Brazilian butt lift is often absorbed by your body, in which case patients may need further treatments to achieve their desired shape.
  • Some patients want a more substantial enhancement to the buttocks than can be safely achieved with a BBL or fillers, as implants are available in many sizes.

Butt Implant Placement Options

Dr. Tillo places butt implants over, under, or inside the largest gluteal muscle, known as the gluteus maximus. Many factors determine the best placement option for butt implants, such as a patient’s BMI, tissue volume, and buttock shape. Deciding the best placement method for each patient requires a great deal of expertise, which is why choosing a surgeon that specialises in gluteal implants is essential.

Submuscular

Submuscular placement is where the surgeon places the implant under the gluteal muscle. Patients that lack volume in the upper region of the buttocks and have an insufficient amount of tissue in the buttock are good candidates for buttock implants in London.

The submuscular technique eliminates the cosmetic risk of the implant being visible underneath the skin, thus producing a more natural result. However, surgeons rarely perform this technique as it comes with a higher risk of disrupting the sciatic nerve and damaging blood vessels.

Intramuscular

Intramuscular placement is where the surgeon places the implant within the gluteal muscle. It is the most popular placement method as it produces a more natural result than the subcutaneous approach while being much safer than the submuscular approach.

However, in contrast to placing them over the muscle, larger implants cannot be safely inserted inside the gluteal muscle. Therefore, this technique provides a more modest enhancement than the subcutaneous method. Furthermore, it is a more invasive procedure that has a more intense recovery period than other methods.

Subcutaneous

Subcutaneous placement is where the surgeon places the implant over the muscle. It is an outdated surgical technique that surgeons rarely perform due to the higher risk of complications. Such complications include a higher risk of the implant being visible underneath the skin, dislocating from its position, and capsular contracture (the growth of scar tissue around the implant).

Implant Sizes

Silicone buttock implants are available in sizes ranging from 200 to 560 ml (cc), allowing the surgeon to customise the procedure according to your desired volume and projection.

However, for best results, the implants must be proportional to your body. An implant that is too large for your buttock can distort the shape of your body and result in a host of medical complications such as infections and nerve damage.

Therefore, it’s essential to choose an experienced plastic surgeon who will determine the most suitable implant size for your anatomy and desired result.

Butt Implant Procedure

A buttock implant procedure involves general anaesthesia and usually lasts between one to two hours. First, the surgeon makes an incision, usually within the gluteal folds or between the buttock cheeks. Afterwards, the surgeon places the implants, typically using the intramuscular placement option described above. Finally, our cosmetic surgeon closes the incisions with sutures.

Recovery

Immediately after your buttock implant surgery in London, you may experience swelling, soreness, and bruising in the buttocks. These symptoms gradually dissipate over the next two to three weeks, after which you will be able to go back to work and resume other light activities. Furthermore, your surgeon will recommend waiting at least a month before you begin exercising again, easing yourself into it gradually.

Results

The results of your buttock implant surgery will be immediately visible, as the implants will add a noticeable enhancement and projection to your bottom. However, you will be able to appreciate the final results three to six months after the surgery. By this time, the post-surgical swelling and other side effects will have largely subsided, and your bottom will appear enhanced and feel natural.

Buttock Implants vs. Fat Transfer

A fat transfer uses liposuction to harvest fat cells from body parts containing excess fat, which the surgeon then injects into areas needing enhancement. A fat transfer that aims to enhance the buttock is known as a Brazilian Butt Lift.

Performed using a technique developed by Dr Tillo, known as the Buttock Enhancement and Superficial Transfer of Fat (BEST-F), BBL is a signature treatment at the CREO clinic. By extracting fat from around the buttocks and injecting it superficially over the gluteal muscle, the BEST-F technique significantly reduces the risk of fatal fat embolisms that results from a traditional BBL while delivering a more natural result.

While a BBL is a more popular procedure, implants are more suitable for some patients who lack excess fat or wish to achieve a more prominent enhancement than a BBL allows.

While the two procedures achieve the same cosmetic goal, they differ in many ways:

Buttock Implants FAQs

How long do buttock implants last?

Silicone buttock implants can safely remain in your body permanently since they are flexible and durable. However, in rare cases, patients may need their implants removed if they develop capsular contracture. This condition not only affects the appearance of the buttocks but causes pain and discomfort.

Can you feel butt implants when you sit?

You should avoid sitting down for at least two weeks after your butt implant surgery, as you will likely feel the implants during this time, and placing direct pressure on your bottom can hinder the healing process. However, as your body heals and adjusts to the implant, they will feel natural to your body, and you will no longer notice them when seated.

Are butt implants safe?

Cosmetic surgeons have used butt implants for decades and widely consider them to be safe. They are made of medical-grade silicone, which means they are tested and licensed to be safe for human use.  However, as with any surgery, buttock implants carry rare risks such as infections, allergic reactions, rupture, and capsular contracture. Your surgeon will openly discuss all associated risks during your consultation.

What is the procedure for removing buttock implants?

Patients that are unhappy with the outcome of the buttock implant surgery can choose to have the implants removed. It is a short procedure that involves the surgeon removing the implants by making incisions in the same place as when inserting the implants. Furthermore, the surgery involves a relatively short recovery period of 1-2 weeks.
