What Are Pec Implants?
Pectoral implants, or pec implants, describe types of solid silicone implants that can be inserted into the chest to add volume and enhance the muscular appearance of the chest. Standard pectoral implants are made of medical-grade silicone gel, giving them a natural-looking appearance. Unlike breast implants for women, they are designed to look and feel like the pectoralis muscles in the chest. They come in a range of shapes and sizes, and may be custom-made, depending on the patient.
Benefits of Male Pectoral Implants
Male pectoral implants can be a transformative solution thanks to their vast range of unique benefits:
- Pectoral implants create a highly desirable and traditionally masculine contoured chest, improving the overall aesthetic of the upper body.
- Pectoral implants add volume and definition to their chest, delivering results that exercise alone is unlikely to achieve.
- Pectoral implants restore lost volume in the chest caused by weight loss or ageing.
- Pectoral implants can correct asymmetrical chest muscles and other anomalies in the chest wall that can arise from injuries or congenital deformities, such as Polandโs syndrome and pectus excavatum.
- Pectoral implants provide a long-lasting and natural looking-result as the surgeon customises the procedure according to the size and shape of your chest and conceals the implants by placing them under the chest muscles.
- Scarring from insertion is within the armpit, making it less noticeable.

What to Expect

During your consultation for pectoral implants, Dr. Tillo will complete a full examination of your chest to assess your aesthetic concerns and determine a suitable treatment plan. Dr. Tillo will explain to you the results you can expect to achieve from surgery, and will ask you about your expectations to ensure that they are realistic.
You will be asked about your medical history, including any medications you take and previous procedures you have ungone. This is to ensure that you are medically fit for surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
In the run up to your procedure, you will need to make several preparations:
- Maintain your BMI โ Your BMI will need to remain at a suitable and stable level to reduce the risk of complications during and after surgery.
- Cease smoking โ You will need to stop all nicotine consumption four weeks before surgery as this can cause complications.
- Reduce alcohol consumption โ Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink to ensure your body is able to heal effectively after surgery.
- Prep your home โ Ensure your home is comfortable for your return after surgery and make any necessary arrangements for child and pet care.
Custom-Made Implants
For patients who choose to have custom-made pectoral implants, the process is longer and consists of several distinct stages:
- Consultation – You will meet with Dr. Tillo to assess your eligibility. If suitable, Dr. Tillo will refer you for a CT scan of the chest on the same day.
- CT Scan – The digital scan is reviewed by Dr. Tillo within a few days, and is then sent to the manufacturer of the implants (AnatomikModelling).
- Implant Design – Our manufacturer uses the digital CT scan to generate a computerised 3D model of the patients chest wall, creating an implant design to fill the chest dent. This takes approximately 2 weeks to complete.
- Design Validation – The manufacturer sends the design to Dr. Tillo which is then discussed with the patient. If any modifications are required, these can be requested and a revised design is created. After the final design is agreed upon, it is approved for manufacturing. This validation process can range from 1-6 weeks, depending on the modifications required.
- Implant Manufacturing – The approved design is sent to the manufacturer to be created, sterilised, packaged and shipped to the clinic. This typically takes 8-12 weeks.
Overall, the entire process requires a minimum of 12 weeks to complete, but may take up to six months to finalise.
The Pectoral Implants Procedure
Pectoral implant surgery usually takes around 2 hours to perform under general anaesthesia or sedation.
Dr. Tillo will first make an incision along the armpit. Afterwards, he will create a pocket between the pectoralis minor and pectoralis major muscles in your chest, in which he carefully places the implants. Finally, the incisions are closed using stitches.
Recovery & Aftercare
After the surgery, you may experience swelling and tightness in the chest, which gradually dissipates over the next few days and weeks.
In most cases, patients return to office work and light activities after one to two weeks. By this time, your side-effects will have subsided, and your incisions will have healed. However, you should avoid strenuous exercises and activities for up to 6 weeks following your surgery.
Pec Implant Results
You will notice instant results from your pec implant surgery as your chest will appear more enhanced. However, it takes around six months for the final results of the surgery to emerge. By this time, the residual swelling will have dissipated, and the implants will have settled to fully reveal the contouring effects of the surgery, which should look and feel natural.
Possible Risks or Complications
Pectoral implant surgery is considered a safe procedure when performed by a suitably qualified surgeon, like Dr. Tillo. However, there are some risks to be aware of, including bleeding, Infection at the incision sites and implant malposition. Dr. Tillo will discuss additional risks during your consultation.
Complementary Procedures
Liposuction
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure to remove stubborn fat cells that canโt be treated with diet and exercise alone. When used around the chest, liposuction can add definition to the pectoral muscles and flatten the chest. When used in addition to pectoral implants, patients can enjoy a desirable toned chest, free from fat deposits.ย
Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia, often called โman boobsโ, is a condition where the breast tissue becomes overdeveloped in men. Gynecomastia surgery permanently removes this breast tissue to create a flatter chest, free from breast tissue. Pectoral implants may be used in tandem with gynecomastia surgery to enhance the chest if the pectoral muscle is not well defined.ย ย
