They can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments like anti-ageing injections and dermal fillers to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

In this article, we will provide more information about skin boosters and what they can help with so that you can better understand what are skin boosters and whether they are the right treatment for you.

What Are Skin Boosters?

Skin boosters, such as Profhilo and Redensity 1, are an injectable treatment containing hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule found naturally in the body that improves the skin’s hydration and elasticity and stimulates the body’s own collagen and elastin production. In doing so, the skin appears firmer, with fine lines and wrinkles smoothed out.

Do Skin Boosters Actually Work?

Skin boosters are an effective treatment for improving the skin’s overall quality by increasing deep skin hydration while stimulating collagen and elastin production.

However, boosters do not restore large amounts of volume to the skin like fillers. For this reason, skin boosters are most beneficial for patients experiencing the early signs of ageing or skin laxity who are not yet for more drastic treatments. Instead, skin boosters are an effective means of rejuvenating the skin quality.

What Skin Boosters Can Help With

As boosters help to increase hydration and stimulate collagen and elastin, they can help to manage many common aesthetic concerns to improve skin quality, overall health, and appearance:

  • Reduced textured, rough, and dry skin patches
  • Tighter, firmer, and more elastic skin
  • Treat early signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles
  • Manages hyperpigmentation to create a more even skin tone
  • Revitalising dull skin

How Skin Boosters Work

The hyaluronic acid in skin booster treatments works to improve the skin’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, improving hydration, which has a range of effects, including plumping and tightening the skin and creating a glowing complexion.

In addition, HA works to stimulate the body’s own collagen and elastin production. As a result, the skin appears tighter and firmer, with fine lines and wrinkles smoothed out. Overall, the skin appears healthier and rejuvenated.

Benefits of Getting Skin Booster Treatment

  • Reduced rough and dry skin patches
  • Tighter, firmer, and more elastic skin
  • Smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles
  • More even skin tone and texture
  • Creates a glowing complexion
  • Improved overall quality of the skin

What Results Look Like

Skin boosters produce a rejuvenated appearance for the skin, with a glowing complexion and more even skin texture and tone. In addition, the skin appears tighter, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful, refreshed aesthetic.

Risks of Skin Boosters

Skin booster injections are widely regarded to be a safe aesthetic treatment. However, some side effects may occur, including redness around the injection sites, swelling, spots, and bruising. These are typically mild and subside on their own. More serious complications include vascular occlusions, though these are rare.

Who Can Get Skin Boosters?

Boosters can be beneficial for adults of any age to improve skin texture and boost the skin’s quality. However, they are ideal for patients in their 30s who are experiencing the early signs of ageing but are not yet ready for alternative treatments such as anti-ageing injections or dermal fillers.

How Long Skin Boosters Take to Work

The exact time for results to be seen from skin boosters treatment can vary depending on the product used. Patients can expect to see some initial results in the first few weeks after treatment, with skin appearing smoother and more hydrated. However, the full effects will only be visible as elastin and collagen production occurs, which can take up to 4-6 weeks.

How Long Do Results Last?

The longevity of results from skin boosters can vary depending on the product used. In general, results of skin boosters like Profhilo typically last 6-9 months, and most patients opt to undergo ‘top-up’ treatments twice or three times a year in order to maintain the results.

Skin Boosters Vs. Dermal Fillers

There are several key differences between skin boosters and dermal fillers:

  • Many skin boosters and dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid as an active ingredient. However, the hyaluronic acid used in skin boosters is typically not crosslinked, unlike that used in dermal fillers.
  • Skin boosters add hydration, restore elastin, and improve the quality of the skin. In contrast, dermal fillers are more viscous and can, therefore, add more volume to soften fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Dermal fillers usually last longer than skin boosters, with results lasting between 9-12 months, whereas skin boosters like Profhilo typically last between 6-9 months.

Cost of Skin Booster Treatment

The cost of skin boosters depends on the type of skin booster and the number of syringes required for the treatment areas.

For example, Profhilo treatments start from £450 for one session using one syringe, and £1,125 for 3 sessions using one syringe each.

What to Expect from Skin Booster Treatment

Skin booster injections consist of a series of injections around the face or other treatment areas such as the hands and decollete, among others. This should not be painful, though a topical anaesthetic can be applied to minimise discomfort if desired. The injections contain hyaluronic acid that is placed just below the skin’s surface.

Typically, initial treatment involves several sessions that are usually spaced 3-4 weeks apart. For example, Profhilo involves two treatments with four weeks between each session. Alternatively, Redensity 1 requires three sessions with 3-week intervals between sessions for immediate and cumulative results.
