A bra line back lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and tissue from the upper back. The surgery addresses skin laxity that can develop following weight loss, pregnancy, or natural ageing, helping improve contour and reduce upper back skin folds often referred to as โback rollsโ.

Patients consider a bra line back lift for a range of structural and functional reasons, most commonly related to excess skin and tissue laxity across the upper back.
Completing a Post-Weight Loss Transformation
After significant weight loss, excess skin is often left behind in the upper back. A bra line back lift removes redundant tissue to help restore smoother contour and proportion across the upper back.
Addressing Upper Back Skin Laxity After Pregnancy
Weight gain during pregnancy can stretch the skin around the bra line. Once this weight is lost after pregnancy, excess skin often remains. A bra line back lift can treat the excess skin to improve the upper back contour.
When Liposuction Alone Is Not Enough
Although liposuction can successfully remove fat deposits from the upper back, it cannot correct significant skin laxity. For this reason, a bra line back lift is often needed either alone or in conjunction with liposuction to remove the excess skin for a smoother upper back.
How the Procedure Works
Below is a step-by-step explanation of what you can expect during a bra line back lift surgery:
What Happens During Surgery
During surgery, an incision is made across the back, along the bra line, removing excess skin in the area. Liposuction may also be used at this time if there is a significant amount of fat deposits in the area. The remaining skin is repositioned to improve the upper back contour, and the incisions are then closed, leaving a scar across the back along the bra line.
Anaesthetic & Operating Environment
A bra line back lift is performed in one of our CQC-regulated clinics, ensuring the highest safety standards at all times. It requires between 2-5 hours in surgery depending on the complexity of the procedure, and is usually completed under general anaesthetic, but can be performed under deep sedation if preferred.
Skin Excision & Contouring Techniques
When the excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is repositioned and secured before being stitched together, creating a smoother contour. Our surgeon will work with you to determine how much skin should be removed to achieve the desired and best possible results.
Scar Placement & Closure Strategy
Incisions are typically placed along the bra line so that the resulting scar sits within natural clothing lines. However, a visible scar across the upper back is an unavoidable part of the procedure. Over time, scars usually fade and flatten as they mature, which can take several months.
As part of our aftercare programme, we provide a range of scar management treatments to support healing following surgery.
Is This Right for You?
If you are considering a bra line back lift, it’s important to know whether you are a suitable candidate for surgery:
Who Itโs For
A bra line back lift is best suited for patients if:
- You have excess skin in the upper back.
- You can maintain a stable weight and have a BMI below 30.
- You are in overall good physical and mental health.
- You have realistic expectations about what a bra line back lift can achieve.ย ย
Who It May Not Be Right For
You may not be suitable for surgery if:
- You are unable to maintain a stable weightย
- You smoke and are unable to stop before surgery
- You have unrealistic goals for a bra line back lift.ย ย
- You only have a small amount of skin laxity, and non-surgical treatment (e.g. BodyTite) is more suitable for your needs.
Procedure Variants & Alternatives
If you are considering a bra line back lift, your surgeon may also discuss related procedures depending on the distribution of excess skin and tissue across the back.
Upper Back Liposuction
If excess fat is present with minimal skin laxity, upper back liposuction may be a more suitable option as it permanently removes fat cells in the treated area. Alternatively, you may choose to combine liposuction with a bra line back lift if you have excess skin and fat, for a more contoured upper back.
Lower Back Lift Surgery
A lower back lift can be combined with an upper back lift for a more comprehensive contouring of the back. This is particularly beneficial for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and have therefore been left with laxity across the back.
Benefits of a Bra Line Back Lift
There are several unique benefits that a bra line back lift can provide:
- Improves the contours of the upper back
- Improves skin contour by removing redundant tissue
- Reduces irritation caused by skin folds around the bra line
- Improves clothing and bra fitย
Before & After Results
The following before and after photographs illustrate the types of contour changes that may be achieved with a bra line back lift. Results vary depending on skin quality, anatomy, and the extent of excess tissue being treated, which will be discussed in detail during consultation.
The CREO APEX Recovery System
We developed the APEX protocol over 15 years of practice to optimise our patients’ recovery. Our recovery-first approach takes steps from the first consultation onwards to ensure that you remain comfortable and support your recovery after surgery.
Pre-Operative Planning
Before surgery, you will be provided with consumables and customised supplements to prepare your body for surgery. We also offer consultations with our functional medicine specialist, Dr Gina Schoeman, who uses advanced blood and DNA testing to further tailor supplements to your unique biology.
Intra-Operative Anaesthetic Strategy
A bra line back lift is typically a day case procedure, which means you wonโt be required to stay overnight. During surgery, we operate on a morphine-free approach to prevent side effects such as nausea, constipation and drowsiness. You can expect to wake up 15-20 minutes after your procedure, and you should be able to walk unaided within 90 minutes.
Structured Post-Operative Care
After surgery, you will have a series of follow-up appointments to monitor healing and support your recovery.
We also provide all of our patients with an exclusive aftercare package, which may include lymphatic drainage massages and/or scar management treatments, as well as an aftercare parcel with products designed to support your recovery.
What to Expect: Before, During & After
Before Surgery
Before surgery, you will need to take several steps to ensure that you are ready for your procedure:
- Stop Nicotine Use – All nicotine products (including vaping, patches, etc) need to be stopped four weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of complications.
- BMI โ Maintain a stable weight and a BMI under 30 to reduce the risk of complications.
- Alcohol โ Reduce your alcohol intake before surgery, as this can delay your recovery.
- Prepare your home for recovery โ Make your home comfortable for your return. Ensure you have support in place for responsibilities such as looking after children and pets.
Day of Surgery
You will be provided with an arrival time at the hospital for your procedure. You will then sign any outstanding paperwork and be prepared for surgery.
After your procedure, you can expect to wake up within 15-20 minutes. Most patients are able to leave the hospital within 60-90 minutes, having gained mobility by this time.
Initial Recovery
You will be provided with compression garments to reduce any swelling in your upper back and the associated discomfort.
You can expect to experience side effects such as swelling, bruising and soreness in the treatment area. These side effects should gradually dissipate, and you should be able to return to light activity 7-10 days after surgery. However, you will need to wait up to six weeks before engaging in more strenuous activity, by which time most patients can return to normal physical activity.
Final Results Timeline
Although changes in upper back contour may be visible soon after surgery, final results become clearer as swelling settles. This process typically takes up to six months, by which time the scarring should be flatter and less noticeable.
Risks, Limitations & Considerations
Like any surgical procedure, a bra line back lift carries a degree of risk. The most common complications include wound breakdown, asymmetries and infections. If you have any concerns during your recovery, you can contact our clinical team for advice.
Scarring is an inevitable part of any procedure, though the scars usually fade and flatten as they mature over time. If you still have concerns regarding your scars after six months, you may choose to undergo scar management treatments, such as laser scar removal.
