What Happens During Surgery

During surgery, an incision is made across the back, along the bra line, removing excess skin in the area. Liposuction may also be used at this time if there is a significant amount of fat deposits in the area. The remaining skin is repositioned to improve the upper back contour, and the incisions are then closed, leaving a scar across the back along the bra line.

It requires between 2-5 hours in surgery depending on the complexity of the procedure, and is usually completed under general anaesthetic, but can be performed under deep sedation if preferred.

What to Expect: Before, During & After  

Before Surgery  

Before surgery, you will need to take several steps to ensure that you are ready for your procedure:

• Stop Nicotine Use – All nicotine products (including vaping, patches, etc) need to be stopped four weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of complications.
• BMI – Maintain a stable weight and a BMI under 30 to reduce the risk of complications.
• Alcohol – Reduce your alcohol intake before surgery, as this can delay your recovery.
• Prepare your home for recovery – Make your home comfortable for your return. Ensure you have support in place for responsibilities such as looking after children and pets.

Day of Surgery  

You will be provided with an arrival time at the hospital for your procedure. You will then sign any outstanding paperwork and be prepared for surgery.

After your procedure, you can expect to wake up within 15-20 minutes. Most patients are able to leave the hospital within 60-90 minutes, having gained mobility by this time. 

Initial Recovery  

You will be provided with compression garments to reduce any swelling in your upper back and the associated discomfort. 

You can expect to experience side effects such as swelling, bruising and soreness in the treatment area. These side effects should gradually dissipate, and you should be able to return to light activity 7-10 days after surgery. However, you will need to wait up to six weeks before engaging in more strenuous activity, by which time most patients can return to normal physical activity.

Final Results Timeline  

Although changes in upper back contour may be visible soon after surgery, final results become clearer as swelling settles. This process typically takes up to six months, by which time the scarring should be flatter and less noticeable.

Risks, Limitations & Considerations
